Malaysia and China continue to deepen their economic ties, as evidenced by Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s three-day working visit to the Asian powerhouse. Arriving in Shanghai on Tuesday, Anwar’s trip underscores the importance of Malaysia’s relationship with its largest trading partner, with bilateral trade reaching $113.82 billion from January to August this year.
During his visit, Anwar, who also serves as Malaysia’s finance minister, aims to bolster relations, expand trade, and foster cooperation in emerging technologies. His itinerary includes engagements in Shanghai and Hangzhou, where he will meet with high-level officials and business leaders to attract greater foreign investment in Malaysia.
In Shanghai, Anwar will participate in the WorldSkills Shanghai 2026 and deliver a keynote address at the WorldSkills Conference. This event highlights the skills and innovations shaping future industries, aligning with Anwar’s focus on artificial intelligence and digital trade. His visit underscores Malaysia’s commitment to collaboration in these key areas.
Further enhancing the visit’s significance, Anwar is set to meet Chinese Premier Li Qiang in Hangzhou on Thursday. The meeting is expected to further cement the two countries’ economic partnership, which has been strong for 17 years. Anwar will also attend the Fifth Global Digital Trade Expo in Hangzhou, where Malaysia is recognized as one of the Guest Countries of Honour.
