Indonesia is leveraging its abundant critical mineral resources, particularly nickel and copper, to bolster its position in the global artificial intelligence (AI) industry. Deputy Minister of Communication and Digital Affairs, Nezar Patria, highlighted the importance of mineral processing in developing a resilient, efficient, and sustainable digital infrastructure, while also enhancing domestic value.
The significance of nickel and copper in the AI sector is tied to their essential roles in the production of batteries, electrical equipment, transmission networks, and systems that support data centers. With Indonesia accounting for approximately 62% of global mined nickel production, the country holds a crucial position in the global mineral supply chain. Patria emphasized that this advantage should be underpinned by responsible processing practices, environmental safeguards, traceability, and sustainable labor practices.
To advance AI development, Indonesia recognizes the necessity of more than just mineral resources. Patria pointed out the need for reliable electricity, fiber-optic networks, data centers, cooling systems, skilled workers, and effective governance to support the burgeoning digital economy.
Indonesia aims to capitalize on its mineral wealth, expanding digital economy, and growing technology workforce to establish itself as a regional AI hub. This strategy is expected to generate higher-value jobs and enhance domestic technological capabilities, ultimately strengthening Indonesia’s role in the AI industry.
