Indonesia has taken a significant step towards enhancing global artificial intelligence collaboration by becoming a founding member of the World Artificial Intelligence Cooperation Organization (WAICO). In discussions with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, Coordinating Economic Affairs Minister Airlangga Hartarto emphasized Indonesia’s commitment to establishing an AI governance framework. This framework aims to promote equitable development and innovation focused on human welfare, uphold national sovereignty, and adhere to inclusive multilateral principles aligned with the United Nations.
In addition to solidifying its role within WAICO, Indonesia has shown interest in playing a more prominent role by seeking a senior position within the organization’s secretariat. During the talks, Minister Airlangga highlighted the potential for enhanced cooperation with China, particularly in the domains of artificial intelligence, investment, and trade. He advocated for quicker market access for Indonesian products and encouraged Chinese enterprises to increase investments in sectors such as advanced manufacturing, the digital economy, and industrial parks within Indonesia.
Moreover, Indonesia reiterated its backing for China’s leadership as the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) chair in 2026. Minister Airlangga proposed the organization of a bilateral business summit, coinciding with a scheduled meeting between Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto and Chinese President Xi Jinping. This initiative aims to further strengthen economic ties between the two nations and explore new avenues for collaboration.
The discussions underscore Indonesia’s strategic vision to enhance its international partnerships and leverage technological advancements for national development. By aligning itself with WAICO and advocating for deeper economic cooperation with China, Indonesia is positioning itself as a key player in the evolving landscape of global artificial intelligence governance and cooperation.
