This directive will impact around 471 airplanes with inspections slated to commence in September. The focus is on the bear strap, a structural sheet that provides support around the fuselage at the location of exit doors. In the past, similar issues were found in the older Boeing 737 Next Generation models, leading to mandatory checks for those aircraft as well.
While no instances of such cracking have been reported in the 737 Max fleet so far, regulators emphasize that the design and manufacturing processes used in these aircraft are similar, raising concerns about the possibility of the same defect appearing. They caution that undetected cracks could compromise the structural integrity of a significant component of the aircraft.
Boeing has indicated it has been collaborating with airlines on this matter since identifying the potential issue in 2019 and fully supports the mandatory inspection program. The company assures that the checks aim to find and address any issues before they escalate into critical problems.
