During the recent fifth Bilateral Consultation Forum in Jakarta, Indonesia and Serbia reached an agreement to enhance their cooperation in various sectors, including trade, industrial development, food and energy security, and emerging technologies. This collaborative initiative is aimed at expanding the bilateral relationship between the two nations.
Indonesia is encouraging Serbia to collaborate on mineral exploration, particularly in nickel processing and electric vehicle supply chains. Additionally, both countries are exploring joint opportunities in artificial intelligence, data centers, semiconductors, and digital transformation, highlighting their commitment to advancing technological ties.
Bilateral trade has been a key focus, with trade between Indonesia and Serbia growing at an average annual rate of 20.62% from 2021 to 2025, reaching $53.6 million in 2025. As part of their efforts to further boost trade, both sides have agreed to consider a potential free trade agreement and are planning to establish a joint economic commission to improve market access in Central and Eastern Europe.
Discussions during the forum also included investment opportunities, industrial production, and employment cooperation. An important aspect of this dialogue was the exploration of government-to-government arrangements to enhance the legal protection for Indonesian migrant workers in Serbia, underscoring the importance of labor rights in their bilateral relations.
The two countries reaffirmed their mutual commitment to sovereignty and territorial integrity, pledging to continue their dialogue in the future. The sixth Bilateral Consultation Forum is scheduled to take place in Serbia, with the date yet to be announced, marking the next step in this evolving partnership.
