Tensions have risen between Iran and Qatar as Tehran accuses Doha of hindering an investigation into the disappearance of three Iranian pilots during the recent conflict. Iran has claimed that these pilots went missing and has criticized Qatar for allegedly obstructing efforts to uncover their fate. However, Qatar has firmly denied these allegations, stating that it is not detaining the Iranian pilots.
Mohammad Bagherzadeh, a senior official in the Iranian armed forces, highlighted that an expert team from the Iranian Air Force has been waiting for months to obtain authorization to travel to Qatar and conduct an investigation regarding the missing pilots. He has urged Doha to allow the investigative team entry and has called on the International Committee of the Red Cross to take action on the issue.
The situation is further complicated by Iran’s previous announcement of recovering the body of Majid Kazemi, one of the pilots, who was reportedly killed in an attack involving the US Al Udeid Air Base located in Qatar. In response, Qatar’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Majed al-Ansari, has categorically denied any claims of detaining Iranian pilots. He elaborated that the Iranian aircraft had allegedly violated Qatari airspace, prompting Qatar to take defensive actions after attempts to establish communication with the pilots were unsuccessful.
Qatar has stated that its search and rescue teams conducted operations to locate the missing pilots and any remains. The Qatari authorities also mentioned that they coordinated with Iran to transfer the remains of one pilot who was found. According to Qatar, an invitation was extended to Iranian officials in April to send a team to Qatar to receive details about the search and rescue mission, but Iran has yet to respond.
This dispute unfolds against a backdrop of ongoing regional tensions involving Iran, the US, and other nations, sparked by the conflict earlier this year. Throughout these developments, Qatar has played a significant diplomatic role, striving to ease tensions and facilitate dialogue among the involved parties.
