Malaysia is in the process of seeking approval from Nepal to dispatch a team of DNA specialists to assist in identifying victims of recent catastrophic floods and landslides in Nepal. Foreign Minister Mohamad Hasan expressed that the deployment of these experts is contingent upon receiving the necessary permissions. The DNA identification process is expected to commence following the completion of ongoing search and rescue efforts. The specialists will work to match DNA samples taken from recovered bodies with those provided by the families of missing Malaysian nationals.
There are 55 Malaysians still unaccounted for in the aftermath of these natural disasters, and Malaysia has proactively gathered DNA samples from their relatives. In some instances, bodies have been buried swiftly due to constraints in available facilities, underscoring the critical role of DNA testing in confirming identities.
The Malaysian team poised to head to Nepal is composed of 11 members and is equipped with 12.4 tonnes of rescue gear. This includes advanced detection instruments, communication technologies, high-capacity drones, and specialized equipment for tunnel rescues. Additionally, the team is outfitted with a four-wheel-drive vehicle and a 10-tonne truck to aid in their operations.
The combined efforts of search, rescue, and DNA identification are aimed at not only locating the missing individuals but also at providing closure for families anxiously awaiting news about their loved ones. Malaysia remains hopeful that these collaborative efforts will yield positive results and bring some measure of relief to those affected by the tragedy.
